Sometimes you don't know what to do, but burying your head and ignoring the problem is not the answer.

It's an emergency. My creditors are threatening me with serious action, what can I do?

Which debts should I pay back first?

It is important to understand the difference between 'priority' and 'non-priority' debts. Your biggest debt will not necessarily be the most important one to pay back first. For example, you should not pay off a catalogue debt before paying your rent because it is more important to keep a roof over your head. Go to our 'Different types of debt' page  to find out more.

I can't afford to pay my rent, what should I do?

If you are having problems paying your rent, you must contact your local St. Leger office straight away for help and advice. If you stop paying your rent you could lose your home. Keeping a room over your head is far more important than paying off loans.

Find out more about what you can do about rent arrears on the Directgov website.

Do I have to pay back money owed by my husband, wife or partner?

You will only have to pay back money owed by other people if:

• You both signed the loan or credit agreement
• You are a joint tenant
• The law says you have to. A main example of this would be Council Tax if you share a home with your husband, wife or partner

Bailiffs have called at my house – can they take my property?

The rules that apply to bailiffs are quite complicated and it is always best to ask for advice if bailiffs become involved. In most cases, bailiffs are not allowed to force their way into your home and you do not have to let them in, but there are exceptions.

You can get advice about bailiffs at your local Citizens Advice Bureau.
